JUN/JUL 2016 Editor’s Note by Jen Theisen

Ladies, find your flip-flops and grab your sunglasses. Summer is finally here! After a long and unseasonably cool spring, I know I’m not the only one eager to get outside and get moving. Every June, I am giddy with excitement. The more relaxed schedule and the summer adventures await, stirring up child-like anticipation and joy. We’ve dedicated this Summer Fun: Let’s Get Healthy issue to inspire our readers to jump aboard the wellness wagon and have a blast while doing it. There are so many reasons to fall in love with summer in Wisconsin. Here are a few of my favorites.

JenI cherish an early morning run without layers offleece and wool, dreaming of the quiet cup of coffee I’ll enjoy in the sun upon my return. Saturday mornings at the farmer’s market are sublime. The sun shines, the music plays, people chat, and the treats are oh-so tasty. Add it to your list—you won’t be sorry. It’s such a neat event and a great way to pick up your healthy, local groceries.

Enjoying dinner at one of the many remarkable restaurants in the valley is always a treat. There’s nothing better than warm nights and a cool glass of white. And the warm, unwinding walk home is good for the soul. I love our little spot in Eau Claire, so close to so many great places.

Hearing my kiddos’ voices drift in through the open window always makes me smile. This year, I’m remembering the easy, lighthearted summers of childhood. I aim to move closer to the summers of days gone by and let go of some of the planning, activities, and events. I’ll let the kids explore and enjoy a looser schedule. Who doesn’t smile warmly remembering the dog days of yesteryear? Running around all day, and as long as I was within earshot of Mom’s whistle telling me it was time to come home, all was well with the world. I promise I won’t be blowing any whistles, but I do hope to recreate a little bit of the carefree days we once knew.
The Northern Wisconsin State Fair still ranks high on the summer fun list. Growing up in Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, nurtured my love for nostalgia. There is no shortage of it at the fair, and I hope to see you there! The Fairfax Pool is another great stomping ground. It’s getting harder and harder to get my teens and tweens to grab the beach bag and come along, but Quinn is always willing. I think all moms would agree, tuckered out kids at the end of a fun day is always welcomed. I look forward to boating days with my crew, summer concert series, the festivals, walks in the parks, the annual Hayward trip, and making memories with friends and family.
My final favorite thing might make your summer easier, too. I am obsessed with my sanity-saving Dyson® V6 rechargeable vacuum. Its 20-minute charge gives me the perfect amount of time to whip through the house once a day in these warmer months.
Summer in Wisconsin seems to whiz by, so let’s soak it in, gals. I’m going to enjoy the controlled chaos and do my best to go with the flow. Let’s get out there and enjoy our awesome community. Go ahead. Sit right down, put your feet up, let the sun warm your face, and be encouraged by the articles of 5ive. The journey continues: faith, family, friends, fitness, and, finance.
